Research into Television Music Channels - Miss Georgiou

Television music channels have vastly become more popular as the years have gone by. People watch them to be entertained in the comfort of their own home by watching their favourite or a various number of artists in music videos on their television. Rather than just watching the music videos alone, they are able to witness where each song is in the charts whilst watching them in better quality than from their laptop for example, also on a bigger screen.

MTV

The target audience for MTV is 13 - 21 year olds, along with anyone who enjoys current chart music and likes to keep up to date with the new releases. For example, Looking at today's schedule, MTV have decided to broadcast 'Maroon 5: brand new vid!', 'the official UK download chart' and '2015's hottest dance hits! Top 10' which all would appeal to under 21 year olds and chart music lovers. 'Maroon 5' is a popular band with a young target audience for the content of their songs are generally positive and happy. 'The UK download chart' is also popular with the younger generations as it allows them to keep up to date with all the new and popular releases of the current day - likewise with the '2015's hottest dance hits'. Having 'the official chart update' on at 6pm appeals to the target audience as, by this time, they would have got home from school/work, ready for dinnertime, making it the perfect time for them to tune in and watch. Not only is this good for the target audience, but also the channel benefits as they are more likely to receive more viewers at this time as the majority of people will be watching the television.

MTV generally play chart music and anything popular in the current day which is what the age range of the target audience want to see. For example, a lot of pop music is popular at the moment from artists featured on the channel such as Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Jason Derulo, Ed Sheeran and Little Mix. As individual artists, their target audience would collectively, roughly be the same as MTV's (as well as being fans of the particular artist's music/genre). Therefore, this also means that MTV will be more appealing to them as they play artists they like with genres they also like. MTV plays chart music to ensure that their target audience is satisfied as they are kept up-to-date with the latest and most popular releases.

MTV is owned by Viacom Media Networks which also own many other successful channels such as Comedy Central  and Nickelodeon. Being owned by a big company means that more funding can be put into each channel and therefore, delivering better content for the audience. Also, more research can be carried out to find out what the target audience want to watch and what they enjoy viewing. Furthermore, globalisation is more likely to occur because the company will be more well-known with a good reputation that will be recognised by the public, encouraging them to watch. Young people are said to more likely be influenced, rather than older people. The target audience being young, means that if they hear of the channel being good, by various people whether that be through social media or just in general by friends, they are more likely to check out the channel and watch it. This also appeals to them because if most of the people their age like it, it supplies something for them to talk about and discuss.

The logo appeals to the target audience for a number of reasons. First of all, its simple colours of black and white make the logo memorable especially as it is in the corner of the channel when the content is being broadcasted. The simplicity and black and white element prevents distraction from the content of the channel and appeals to the target audience as they are more likely to find this annoying if it was positioned anywhere else on the screen. The way in which the 'M' is bold and large makes the music element of the channel stand out and 'TV' is written in graffiti styled font which appeals to younger people as they are more associated with graffiti than older. Graffiti is supposedly current and used by younger generations so younger people feel more related to the channel.

FLAVA

The target audience for FLAVA are 13 - 21 year olds who enjoy hip hop and R n B type genres. For example, looking at today's schedule,  'The Urban A List', 'Nicki vs Drake vs Lil Wayne' and 'Flava's Hip Hop Charts' all of which would appeal to this target audience. 'The Urban A List' would appeal, as audiences are able to hear the best of urban songs, which is a popular genre within this audience. 'Nicki vs Drake vs Lil Wayne' would appeal to the target audience as all 3 artists are popular within the music channel's genres and they are successful, current artists of today. 'Flava's Hip Hop Charts' would further appeal to the target audience as they are able to hear the best songs of hip hop - a particular genre that appeals to the target audience.

Flava mainly play urban, hip hop and current music. For example, artists featured on this channel are ones such as Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne. This type of music is played because this is what this type of age group collectively like. Stereotypically, people of this age group like this type of music as they can either relate or just enjoy this type because they are more familiar with it.

Flava is owned by Sony Pictures Television who also own GSN, AXN and GetTV. This is a conglomerate company which means that the company have a higher budget and can input more money to each channel that they make. This therefore creates better, more audience satisfying and also successful music channels.

The logo appeals to the target audience because of it's simplicity. It's black and white which is not only simple, but also prevents distraction from when the audience are watching the music videos. The slanted font makes the logo appear current and quirky, mirroring the content that is on the channel and also the audience considering their age - therefore appealing to them.

CLUBLAND TV

Clubland TV has a target audience of 15 - 21 year olds. For example, today's schedule features 'The Future Club Classics', 'Mid-Morning Mashup!' and '100% Club Hits'. 'The Future Club Classics' and '100% Club Hits' allow the target audience to be familiar with the best and most up-to-date club music and music to follow/progress in popularity.

Clubland generally plays club, dance and current music. Artists featured within the content are ones such as David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Shift K3Y. Clubland features these type of artists, their work and generally this genre of music becaus this is the type of music channel the genres are aimed to be featured on. These 3 artists are successful artists of this genre which appeal to the target audience because they are able to watch/listen to successful artists in their favouritised do genre.

All Around The World Productions own Clubland TV aswell as also owning Planet Pop and Channel AKA. His isn't the biggest of companies determining the amount of channels they own. However, the channels they do own are very successful, retrieving lost of money. The company are building a good reputation which seeks a wider audience and an enhance in the success of the company.

The logo appeals to the target audience as they are generally young adults. The 'Clubland' part of the logo is in a font which makes it appear like strobe/club lights. Furthermore, the change in size as  the font is nearer to the front makes it quirky and different. The simplicity of black and white allows the music to create the colour and not for distraction to be made when the audience are watching the music videos with the log in the corner.

VH1

Vh1 has a target audience of all ages who enjoy listening to a mixture of genres. For example, 'Stunning 21st Century Power'  is on today's schedule and appeals to the target audience as it demonstrates the current side to the channel where the music is mostly new releases.tis ensures that the audience are kept up-to-date with the latest tracks.

Vh1 usually play a mixture of classic and current music. For example, artists which feature are Whitney Housten, Madonna and Rod Stuart. Vh1 play this type of music as it allows for the taste of the individual from the audience to be satisfied and happy with the content if this music channel.

Vh1 is owned by Viacom Media Networks. This company also owns MTV and Nickolodeon, which are two very successful channels. Viacom are a large successful company, meaning that more money can be inputted into the channel and its content. The audience can widen from the different channels that the company already owns, they are able to promote each of the channels to seek the most wide audience.

The logo appeals to the target audience as the vibrancy if the colours display a happy, positive mood, which generally the songs in the content display. The way that there are lots of colours also reflects the variety of different genres that may be featured on the channel.

KERRANG!

Kerrang's target audience is anyone who enjoys rock/punk genre
music. For example, today's schedule shows '10 Hottest Rock Anthems', 'Summer 15' and 'Show Me The 21st Century Anthems!'. These all appeal to the target audience for different reasons. All of them include the most current and/or best songs of the rock/punk genre which is the genre that the target audience enjoy listening to. This makes them approve of the content and make them want to tune in and listen/watch what appears.

Kerrang plays the majority of rock music from the likes of artists such as Nickleback, No Devotion and Fall Out Boy. This music channel plays this type of music as it is what the audience want to see/listen to, as this is a channel based around this particular genre and so expect to see it featured.

Kerrang is owned by The Box Plus Network. As well as Kerrang, the conglomerate owns Magic and Smash Hits. Being owned by this company is a benefit as its other channels demonstrate different genres and so open their audiences up to the rock genre. Likewise with Kerrang audiences seeking other genres by watching other channels belonging to this company. The audience therefore becomes a wider one and more popularity and good reputation of other successful channels makes Kerrang more popular as the audience are impressed by other channels of the same company.

Kerrang's logo appeals to the target audience in many different ways. It is black and white which makes its colouring simple but the boldness and contrast of the colours makes the logo seem more 'punchy' and consequently, more rocky. Black and white are also stereotypical colours of the clothing that people interested in this music would wear as they tend to be scene/punk/goth's and black is generally a colour they are expected to like. The boldness of the lettering makes it more direct, and statement-like giving a stern effect - especially with the input of the exclamation. The scruffy edges of the lettering and the lines passing through gives the logo an edgy and daring look. For all of these reasons, the target audience appeal.

I believe that MTV is broken down into different channels (base, hits, dance, rocks, classic) to attract a wider audience and to satisfy every type of individual. By making channels specific to a genre, you are likely to get more viewers as they are able to acces the channel easily and still being content with what they can hear/see. I think that because the music industry is so varied and open, it is very important that they appeal to the target audience as every genre needs to be covered to ensure that every individual's needs are fulfilled. This is why there are a variety of music channels - so that everyone has a channel they like. From carrying out this analysis, I have learnt that music channels are very important in the way that they can influence the way particular music is perceived or portrayed. Having music channels are also important and I will bear in mind what type of music channel I would like my music video to be featured on. The genre of music video I am thinking of creating is either pop or indie. I find that these are two popular genres that display their popularity from the numerous songs of these genres existent in the charts at the moment. I would also like my target audience to be of similar age range to MTV and so pop and indie have proved to be popular with this aged audience.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of how music channels appeal to an audience. You have identified five different television channels and you have aimed to write an analysis of how the channels appeal to an audience. However, some of these points are a little basic and this is because you have not elaborated on the points and examples that you have included on the target audience.

    Aim-
    1) Always relate your points back to the target audience, to support points
    2) Explain the examples of the tv schedule, to demonstrate further understanding of the channel and of the music industry- how does it appeal to the target audience?
    3) Within your summary you need to start considering what genre of music you are considering and why?

  2. This post now demonstrates a proficient understanding of how music channels appeal to an audience. You have made a start in including examples, to support the points that you have made, on schedules and audiences. But you need to ensure that you have followed this format throughout, as the first analysis on MTV is more detailed, than the rest of your analysis points.
